companies and personal branding: fear #7 - But, I don’t sell.

No SolicitingI represent a company so I don’t sell anything - so I don’t see how personal branding helps. How do I make myself valuable to them? - Kate * Well…..I beg to differ. You do SELL something. You SELL yourself every day. The greatest sale you make in any day is the SALE you make to yourself. You either SELL yourself in that you have the self confidence and energy to create a fantastic day or you SELL yourself on the fact that “you’re having a bad hair day”; “you’re feeling down”; “you’re just not ready”. There’s many people who don’t think that they SELL ANYTHING. Either they’ve made some sort of judgment call about being called a salesperson or they aren’t aware of the great importance that internal and external communication makes to your success. For example, Robert Kyiosaki, bestselling author of the book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, is an author, right? Yet, he’s also a SALESPERSON. You don’t become the best SELLING author without selling people on your ideas, thoughts, quotes and stories. So, as a “company representative” you sell the integrity of your company, the quality and competence of the organization and every soul representing the organization (just because you may have the title COMPANY REP know that EVERYONE at that company from the janitor, to the mailroom, to the CEO and to the receptionist, represents the company. So, to make yourself VALUABLE to them you have to do more than “just be company representative” (how unexciting is that?!). You must express your brand with an energy that attracts others and is memorable. To move from “know” to “like”, they must sample your character and competence. To move from “like to trust”, they must feel strongly that you know what you’re doing, you’re doing something that’s of interest to them and that you value them. To value them, you need excellent personal branding (so that you’re centered and focused on what makes you best - and express the confidence that comes from that) and excellent engagement skills. To have great engagement skill - you must, as Shakespeare said, “know thyself”. If you know thyself, then you would know - that you sell everyday (your ideas, your thoughts, your solutions, yourself!)

Time Saving Communication Tools!

Here are some great time saving tips:

  • Leave “full” voice messages that give substance like phone number (said slow enough that you can actually capture it); who you are (first name and last name - I know 100+ Diane’s and your voice on voicemail sounds no different from anyone elses) then why you’re calling and what you need from them; then the action step that needs to happen next and the information they need to perform that (for example, call me back on Friday between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. if you can or email me with the better time - my email address is xyz@website.comand my phone number is: 555-555-5555). Those horrible, “it’s me - call me” (ugh, neandrathal type voice message!)
  • Emails that get to the point - no more extras like “will you or won’t you…please say yes, are you thinking, am I rambling (YES!)” Emails like that are huge time wasters.
  • If you’re forwarding something or posting something ERASE the info not needed (who cares that your the 12,000th person to forward it or who cares what Kyle said 5 days ago). Clean up your posts and forwards.
  • Teach other people to do the same.
  • If you’re working with someone and creating meetings, share calendar info on google or yahoo calendar. Shorten the time that phone tag and calendar email comparisons take ( and the enormous amount of email space it takes to - as a friend of mine said, “nothing like 30 emails to just coordinate one 1-hour meeting, sheesh!”)

conversations with customers: blogging for 2-way communication

coffeeStarbucks, after recently shutting down all their stores for in-house training in the late afternoon, has opened with new excitement and vigor in keeping connected with their customers. Recently launches and  highlighted is MyStarbucksIdea a blog designed to provide customers a chance to submit ideas and thoughts of what they wanted to see from Starbucks. It’s the Web 2.0 version of the “suggestion box” and it’s brilliant! There’s a VOTE section where customers have a chance to support the ideas they like. There’s even a section to talk about your fave flavors and a listing of recent drinkers.

Howard Schultz, CEO, Starbucks rolled out the 10th transformation agenda and from those came their 7 BOLD MOVES to refocus on customers, coffee and their employees (their internal personal brand advocates). It states:

  • 1. Be the undisputed coffee authority
  • 2. Re-engage and inspire our partners
  • 3. Re-ignite our emotional attachment with customers
  • 4. Expand our global presence - while making each store the heart of the local neighborhood
  • 5. Be a leader in ethical sourcing and environmental impact
  • 6. Create innovative growth platforms worthy of our coffee
  • 7. Deliver a sustainable economic model

A delicious move to emotionally connect with their customers! Hmm….let’s watch. I’m excited to see the way they are connecting and communicating with their clientle. It’s stands out so much, for me, since I come from a community (like many of you) that has several coffee houses. While there are many here, locally, that do well - I’m amazed when I see one “advertising” the newspaper and yet when you go to their establishment the “experience” is less appealing and downright bad. Rarely do they remember who you are (even rarer for the owner). In fact, I’ve taken a team of CEOs there for lunch and everyone of us agreed “their broken”. We used their private room, which gladly we paid for and even bought lunch, and yet the interaction was COLD. Brew up some great connections and make the people who count for you remember that you made them feel good!

Excelling At Your Brand - Time Saving Paperwork Tools

The number one growing paper concern is:

  • People Printing Out Their Emails

How do you handle this?

  • Set up files for your email so that you can file things away under appropriate folders for future reference.
  • Set up filter within your email so that emails are automatically rerouted and placed in the files.
  • YouSendIt.com is great for sending large files instead of printing them out and mailing
  • CutePDF helps convert word documents to PDFs - for free. Sending word documents is dangerous for a couple of reasons: #1: People are leary because .doc documents can carry viruses; #2: You are subject to what ever settings or margins they have on their computer - so it might take away from your professional presentation
  • Utilizes the 43 file system in setting up tickler files and reminder files.

When You Speak You Express Your Personal Brand

  • People TalkingIf you want to be perceived as a professional, watch how you speak.
  • Double negatives like “I didn’t know nothing” make you look less professional and less educated.
  • Phrases like “That’s a great ideal!” when the correct statement is “That’s a great IDEA” make you look less in command of proper speech and take away from your brand strength.
  • Be careful not to apologize too much “I’m sorry I can’t get my laptop to work”; “I’m sorry I wasn’t prepared” - if you keep saying you’re SORRY then you leave them with the “taste” that you really ARE A SORRY PERSON.
  • Know your personal communication style - “in order to know others you must first know yourself”.

think before you link: part 5 - blog for visibility

BlogThen, finally, you can BLOG to get listed high on the search engines. Know that blogging takes a weekly commitment because the search engines search for new content - always!Easy to start blogging by:

  • * Using a tumblr blog (easy to use, free to post)
    * Link your blog to your Plaxo and/or your biznik profile so it will post in several places
    * Send out your RSS feed line to everyone so that they can keep up to date on your postings
    * Show some LINK LOVE (link to other people’s blogs especially when you quote them or their idea). The more “link love” the more popular you are. The more popular you are - the higher you post.
    * WordPress is also a free blog and very easy to use. It’s like typing into Microsoft Word and uses WYSIWYG technology (what’s that?? - pronounced wizzywig - it stands for What You See Is What You Get) Basically, it means what you type is what’s seen on the web - just as you’ve typed it.
    * Typepad and eblogger are useful blog software too yet there are some costs involved.
    * What do you blog about? What you want to be known for. Remember, blogging is another form of communication. It is place where they can sample your character and competence.

Excel Your Brand: Time Saving Tips, Part 1 - Meeting Time Savers

Much of our time is spent in meetings. And, if you’re the unfortunate soul that has to plan a meeting that can become a huge time vacuum. Here are some great tools to manage that.

First, as a gift to all the meeting planners, event planners, assistants, non-profits and solo professionals who are planning meetings, I have to state this on your behalf: If you receive a meeting invitation or event invite that says RSVP - that means you MUST respond, YES or NO. It is asking for a response - not a negative response, not just a positive response but a RESPONSE - yes or no. So, the ball in now in your court and you must answer.

Here are some great online meeting prep time saving tools:

  • MeetingWizard.com - meeting notice and reminders, free to use
  • Evite.com - more social, nice templates and reminders, free to use
  • Jott.com - transcribe to email and text, free to use
  • Postcalls.com - one message sent to hundreds, small cost
  • Volusion.com - online free instant chat, be easily accessible, free to use
  • SendOutCards.com -physical in hand meeting invites, in your handwriting, get open every time, low cost
  • Fax the info and agenda needed to give people thinking time!

think before you link: part 4 - get social

Shaking HandsNow, is the time to become involved with social networks that can help build and solidify your brand on-line.
Here’s a listing of some ones to become involved in:
o LinkedIn - Professional Network (lots of executives, CEOs and recruiters here)
o Naymze - make sure you’re listed here right away. It is effective in combating what’s Zoominfo’s been listing about you.
o Plaxo
o Biznik - for small, home based business owners
o Ryze - networking group online
o Ecademy - networking group online
o Facebook - more for the college group or early college grad, still a great place to be seen and network
o Ziggs - networking group online

Here’s a few helpful pointers about LinkedIn…

1. Always make sure your connections are searchable. (yes, you want to reveal those).
2. Think before you link (more on that in a moment)
3. Have a great and thorough profile. The more complete your profile, the better. Not only does it help people know you better, but I think that you appear higher in LinkedIn search results with a more complete profile. Also, based on your profile and contacts, the system will show you additional names that you may know. You can make our profile public, and it will show up in Google and other search engines. Again, the more complete it is, the better for you!
4. Put your exact contact information in the “how to contact you” section.
5. Personalize the automatic invites . Stay away from using the generic “LinkedIN” invite. Don’t send the generic connection message when inviting people to join your network. Look through their profile, find some reason that you should connect and write something more personal.
6. Thank people for linking you.
7. Use the answers section - provide some answers and see who is answering, too.
8. Use LinkedIn search feature to find people in industries and companies with whom you would want to work. You can limit the search based on keywords, industry, and/or location. The contacts I have on LinkedIn are mostly people that I have found using the search feature or searching the connections of my connections.

think before you link: part 3 - before you blog

    • Continuing our conversation from THINK BEFORE YOU LINK part 2 - So, where are you going?Once you know what you want to be known for (your VPs and your authentic strengths) then start commenting on Amazon.com on books regarding the subject that best projects your VPs and what you want to be known for. For example, since “managing your leadership brand” is an important part of what I do, then I’ll comment on books on leadership from such authors as John Maxwell, Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard and Patrick Lencioni - all authors I feel comfortable being associated with and very familiar with their works that I can comment on them. Here’s what to do:
    • Frustrated computer user

Register with Amazon in your own name. The name you want to “show up” when they google the subject that you would like to be associated with. Use your real name so that your comments will link with you. No more usernames like “fluffybunny64″ - use your own full name.

    • Comment on books and subjects you want to be known for.Amazon.com places high on the search engines.
    • Every comment you make is seen as a web page.
    • The more web pages you have on the web the higher you will place.
    • Now, it’s time to post comments on other blogs. Search for the subject that you are interested in that has something to do with what you’re doing. For example, for me, I might type in ‘leadership’ or maybe ‘personal branding’ or maybe even ‘networking’ - what about ‘public speaking’.

In the search, there will be websites and blogs that come up, In fact, to be more specific, search for ‘leadership blog’ or ‘personal branding blog’, etc.

Read some of the posts of those blogs that showed up on the FIRST PAGE of the search. Now, post a comment on those blogs. These blogs rank ‘high’ on the search engine so this means that your comments will post high on the search engine. Remember, as anything on the web, use your full name.
